using dvd-ram in this drive may also try a >32768 transfer and I won't
have a handy dandy -ts option to fix it?

Alan, I am a much happier user right now.  Thank you for all your help
thus far.  If you would like me to run any more tests that would be
useful to anyone, I'm very willing to do what I can.

Just to let everybody know -
Tried -ts=32768 for cdrecord 2.01 with my USB cd writer for the -atip
option (disk info) - I think I tried 32767 as well. Doesn't improve
my situation - drive still drop off usb bus with cdrecord 2.01 - I'll
need to look further, I guess, and/or come back to it one day.

(of course, with the latest development in open solaris/schilliX,
I just might try to see how the drive behaves under solaris when I can
get my hand on suitable x86 hardware...).
