Hih Michel,
You should probably also post to the list (perhaps you were going
to do that anyway) so others can see the results. Someone may have the
same problem in the future.
Now, I am ready to explain my problem and the solution.
PROBLEM
I have an old toshiba satellite 310CDT (with the original hard disk
replaced by a new hard disk with 80Gb capacity).
I have installed fedora core 3 with the kernel 2.6.11-1.27_FC3.
But the USB port was not working with a memory stick usb 2.0.
Below you have an extract of the dmesg.

SOLUTION
Stephen Gowdy and Alan Stern, after an examination of dmesg, have
concluded, that the origin of the problem was not the USB key but was
coming from the BIOS and Alan Stern has suggested to update the BIOS.
I have done that with the most recent version of the BIOS found on the
toshiba site (16-2-2000 Version 8.0) and that has solved the problem
explained above.
Thank you for your help
PS : After updating the BIOS, it was not so simple to terminate the
installation. I had a problem at boot, Fedora was booting and rebooting.
The solution found, was to stop all unused services (first by starting
an interactive boot).
