Hi Alan, I goofed when I first posted this, here is the rest of the information:
I'm running Debian stable with a 2.6.11.11 kernel from kernel.org. I can't run the 2.6.12.1 kernel since the Plextor driver will not compile against the 2.6.12.1 kernel source. There are changes in the Video 4 Linux 2 that are incompatible as yet. I don't understand the code well enough to fix the driver to compile against the 2.6.12 kernel base. udev is installed and running. Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
