Hello,

I followed your discussion with Joerg Schilling about the cdrecord 2.0 problem with kernel 2.6.8

I use an IDE LG writer over an ide-usb box and encountered about the same problems.

Just by chance I found some mails about using the device files. I tried this and it works for me. What I do is
using

a) cdrecord dev=/dev/scd0 ............
instead of

b) cdrecord dev=(2,0,0) ............

a) works, b) does not.

I know that Schilling dislikes a) very much, but for me it is fine.

Please let me know, whether this helps you also. I would post it to the mailing lists, if it is not just a special trick only usable on my setup.

Best regards,
Joachim Zach

Hi Joachim - I think this thread is appropriate to the rest of the
people, hence the CC:.

I am aware of the "dev=/dev/scd0" syntax - I believe it depends on two
things:
(1) one uses a 2.6.x linux kernel - the mechanism is called 'SG_IO',
and it is linux-specific, and does not apply to any other platforms.
(2) a non-standard (i.e. author-not-approved) patch applied to cdrecord.

I am still on 2.4.x (and not upgrading/no-other-box in the forseeable future)
- but it might be useful if you could try getting a bit further with perhaps
Joerg and help of others, since you have the relevant usb hardware. We
were exploring the option of using SchillX (a x86-solaris based bootable
CD distribution, http://schillix.berlios.de/ ) to find a common ground.

Hin-Tak
