It's not frowned upon at all; quite the opposite.  However in this case 
it's not likely to help because ehci-hcd has been very well debugged 
already.

More likely is that your getting communication errors of some sort.  Full 
speed transfers are much more tolerant of noise and interference than 
high-speed.  (Note that ehci-hcd is the high-speed USB driver.)
