I might have been crazy. I compiled the kernel with the mass storage verbose option since the very beginning, :). I just removed the scsi modules to allow getting earlier messages (with scsi modules there's a chance revlevant info is lost from dmesg).
Attached is the dmesg output (of course 1st part is chomped). Please let me know if you would need any other output...
