I'd be more than happy to add debug messages you may need, test any 
patches you might come up with, even provide SSH root access to the 
machine (which probably won't be useful, since you can't reconnect 
the device physically). So if there's anything I can do to help solving 
this problem, please let me know.

I already am able to use it all right, although it's a bit of a hassle 
having to unload the ehci module first. But per se it's not an issue.
 
Besides, I just checked with my favourite online store, and it seems 
that the only controllers I could afford are made by VIA. :-( I'm just 
a student, I don't have the kind of pocket money where I can spend $20 
just for the sake of not having to type 'rmmod ehci_hcd' anymore before 
using a device.
