Jonatan, Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Your reply made me understand something I hadn't realised before, namely, that if I give the drive a permanent name via a udev rule, then the fstab file will, in turn, automatically be using a permanent mount point for that permanently-named drive. However, when I created the permanent name via a SYMLINK and then edited the fstab file to include that permanent name, I found that, on reboot, the fstab file went back to the temporary name assigned by the kernel. Therefore, I created the permanent name by using the NAME key and then edited the fstab file to include that permanent name. That change to the fstab file did survive rebooting.
