Then things become really confusing: Well, practically all new USB mass storage devices being made nowadays use Transparent SCSI instead of UFI. There's still the possibility of old multi-LUN devices though; that's why I asked Matt about it. If there was a reasonable chance of encountering a multi-LUN UFI device then I would not recommend automatically setting max_lun to 0.
