Alan, you got me thinking. Although I've tried many
kernels/configurations/computers, I never thought of trying a different USB
key, simply because my keys have worked fine for everything else up to this
point. I tried a Kingston Data Traveller and this works fine now! So two
last questions for you:
1) What could be the reason the SanDisk Cruzer key had such weird symptons?
2) Is there a type of key that is most compatible with linux? for booting
and mounting, etc?

There's nothing obviously wrong in the logs, except that the USB key
refused to respond to a READ command until it was unplugged and
reconnected. The computer did exactly the same things both times, and the
key responded the second time but not the first.
Without knowing what's wrong with the key, it's hard to say what can be
done to work around the problem. One possibility is to increase the
length of the delay before Linux tries to use the key.
If you have usb-storage built as a module, you can raise the delay to 10
seconds (for example) by adding a line that says
options usb-storage delay_use=10
to /etc/modprobe.conf. If you have usb-storage compiled into the kernel,
you can get the same effect by adding
usb-storage.delay_use=10
to the boot command line.
