Hello.....List

I am having trouble with a usb-hard-drive on a gentoo-linux ibm-thinkpad...

kernel is 2.6.15

The strange thing is, that sometimes it works and sometimes (most of the
times) it does not....and it keeps on spinning (clicking) but its
impossible to get it mounted.....

It is a small hard-Disk..Power comes over the usb-cable.

Any idea where i can start troubleshooting ????

Thanks Luigi

Hello Luigi,

I had a similar problem with an USB housing at my Asus Laptop. Problem was weak power supply to the drive. I do have two USB ports at my laptop and only one of them seems to supply enough power for the disk. When I connect to the other port I hear only clicking noises and mount is impossible (sounds familiar, does'nt it?).

Interestingly there was a special USB cable supplied with my housing that has two USB-A connectors on one side, and one connector has only the power wires assembled. The manufacturer knows the power issue and trys to combine the two USB ports to gain a hight power outlet in this way.

Greetings
        Thomas
