Hi. I have a strange (repeatable) problem using a Tascam us-122. Whenever I attach another usb device to one of the other usb ports on the back of the motherboard (Asus K7S8X), the analog sound output starts to crackle. I've tested this using the current Debian Etch (kernel 2.6.15/alsa 1.0.10), Ubuntu Dapper (kernel 2.6.15/alsa 1.0.10) and I've also installed Gentoo testing (kernel 2.6.17-rc1/alsa 1.0.11rc4) and they all have the same problem.
I've also tried to repeat the same problem using a different usb controller (a pcmcia card plugged into my laptop) but the problem does not happen there, so I guess it's something to do with the Asus K7S8X's usb controller in particular. I should also point out that the problem also happens when I boot the Asus K7S8X into Windows 2000 (I don't have XP, so I don't know whether the Windows issue is a driver problem that's been fixed since). I realize that it wouldn't be costly for me to just get a new pci usb controller, but I wondered whether anyone would know if this is an easily fixable software issue, or is it a bug too deep in the hardware to resolve? I've left a copy of a sound recording containing the crackling here: http://www.carbon.eclipse.co.uk/problem.wav It's a recording of a 15 second 440Hz sine wave played back through the Tascam, and I attached another usb device at around 7 seconds into the recording (at which point the crackling starts) and then removed it at about 12 seconds into the recording (at which point the crackling stops).
