I have to ask:  why don't you go ahead and use an EZ-USB or ST7
processor (there are certainly others; I mentioned those to because
they came to mind immediately) as your interface?  At the moment, it
looks like you're causing yourself a lot of extra work in order to
avoid the processor.  A second choice would be to just build your
device around RS-232, and either use the computer serial port or a
USB-serial adapter.
