On my system same things are happen, when i do heavy I/O via USB. Try to use firewire interface, cable seems more thick, while USB 2.0 one doesn't seem to have good metal shield at all (in very beginning of 2000th even usb mouses had good sheilded, thick cables, mouse was unusable ;). But i think kernel could handle this kinds of error more gracefully.
