It's hard to tell exactly what that comment means, but it appears to 
indicate that this change may be necessary to make the driver work with 
the printer.  It won't affect the printer's speed.

Did you also read the earlier comment on that same page?  "Works smooth 
with Kernel 2.6.x. But the printer only talks USB 1.1 (12mbit/s). Apart 
from that, its postscript engine is slow."

Disabled by developers at HP.  Possibly.

You can't set it up if it has been disabled.  Besides, why would you want 
to set it up if it gives lots of errors?

Remember, the speed at which a device communicates is determined by the 
device.  The kernel has nothing to do with it.
