To debug this further: Build a kernel with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG turned on.
When a hang occurs, make a copy of the kernel log (if the hang is severe 
enough you may have to echo the log to the console and photograph the 
screen or use a serial console) and also get a task list dump 
(Alt-SysRq-T).
