Sorry, not a subscriber to this list, but, replying to Bojan's post http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-usb-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg17547.html about charging the Blackberry under Linux ...
I've discovered that my new BlackBerry 8700c will charge from my Linux USB port if I turn the BlackBerry off. Naturally you can't use the phone in this mode, but it is in the "soft off" position, where it wakes itself up for the next alarm, so it can still be used as an alarm clock, and will charge itself overnight in my hotel room while I sleep. The LED indicator strobes yellow slowly, and when I turn it on later, it is charged. It isn't even charging very slowly; it only takes an hour or two to charge the phone fully. Conjecture: the default current on the USB port is not sufficient to both operate the BB and charge the battery, so the BB blocks charging the battery. But, if it is turned off, it doesn't need current to run the device, so it lets the battery charge. This Y-cable came with a friend's USB hard drive enclosure. Apparently 2 USB port's worth of power is not enough either.
