Okay, so what distro are you using? With 2.6.18... are you using udev, hotplug, hal and such? Have you updated your utils for the 2.6.x line? initramfs tools need to be re-run once the tools are updated, did you do that? You tell us so much, but leave out so much we can only guess. Just FTR and FYI, MANY things in USB are different in the 2.6.x Linux kernel than what was the norm in the 2.4.x Linux kernel.
