I just upgraded an Inspiron 7500 laptop from RedHat 9 to Centos 4.3 and the external USB sound no longer works. It worked fine under RedHat 9. Now my toddlers cannot watch their DVDs so please help me :-).
The 2.6.9 CentOS 4.3 kernel starts up usb and goes into a loop adding and removing the external audio box: Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v2.2 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 0000:00:07.2 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 0000:00:08.0 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: UHCI Host Controller Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: irq 5, io base 00001060 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: 2 ports detected Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Linux Kernel Card Services Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm] Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 0000:00:04.0 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 0000:00:04.1 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 0000:01:00.0 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: CardBus bridge found at 0000:00:04.0 [1028:009e] Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: Enabling burst memory read transactions Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: Using CSCINT to route CSC interrupts to PCI Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: Routing CardBus interrupts to PCI Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta TI: socket 0000:00:04.0, mfunc 0x01021c72, devctl 0x66 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0698, PCI irq 11 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Socket status: 30000006 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 0000:00:04.1 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 0000:00:04.0 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 0000:01:00.0 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: CardBus bridge found at 0000:00:04.1 [1028:009e] Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: Using CSCINT to route CSC interrupts to PCI Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: Routing CardBus interrupts to PCI Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta TI: socket 0000:00:04.1, mfunc 0x01021c72, devctl 0x66 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0698, PCI irq 11 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: Socket status: 30000006 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 2 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2 Dec 23 21:25:17 laptop kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling... Doing some research, I found mention of problems with overcurrent detection for some hardware, and I am definitely getting a message to that effect, so I upgraded the kernel to the latest -- 2.6.20-rc2 -- to see if the (new) ignore_oc flag would fix this. It changed the behavior but didn't fix the problem. Looking at the light on the USB audio box it looks like it is just enabling and disabling the peripheral at much higher speed.
