well I think I tracked down the source.. It appears that my system

the Seagate drive comes with 2 USB connectors, one is power+data,
one is power only. the WD drives come with a power+data only
connector.

When connecting the cable that came with the seagate to the WD
drives, both are detected on the system.

Now to see if I can track down where I can buy a couple more
of those types of cables.
