well I think I tracked down the source.. It appears that my system is not providing enough power for the drive..(despite the fact that the little blue LED lights up..) the Seagate drive comes with 2 USB connectors, one is power+data, one is power only. the WD drives come with a power+data only connector. When connecting the cable that came with the seagate to the WD drives, both are detected on the system.
