I have a machine I hadn't used in a while and just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on which is displaying the following weird problem... Some time within 24 or 48 hours of booting the whole USB sub- system apears to simply "shut down". dmesg shows only an "orderly" disconnect of all USB devices, i.e.:
kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:27 nova kernel: [65939.522101] usb 4-2.1: USB disconnect, address 3 kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:28 nova kernel: [65939.522104] usb 4-2.1.1: USB disconnect, address 5 kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:28 nova kernel: [65939.522383] usb 4-2.1.3: USB disconnect, address 6 kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:28 nova kernel: [65939.522687] usb 4-2.6: USB disconnect, address 4 kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:28 nova kernel: [65939.522690] usb 4-2.6.1: USB disconnect, address 7 kern.log.0:May 7 02:18:28 nova kernel: [65939.522774] usb 4-2.6.2: USB disconnect, address 8 But nothing had been physically disconnected, and in fact this has happened some times in the middle of the night. After this happens, physically disconnecting and reconnecting the devices does nothing. Suspecting faulty USB hardware on the mainboard, I installed a PCI USB card and plugged everything into that, but I'm getting the same behavior. What could be causing this? How can I debug it further?
