Thanks, I will do this. Question: does the speed setting (via pppd) actually matter, or is it just the slowness of the driver? Somewhat off topic question: to which mailing list should I go for the modem stuff itself, i.e. looking for GSM-related commands, people who have reverse engineered the GSM-related processes when necessary, etc.? I'd like to access the GSM-related parts includign signal strength, and would do some coding if necessary (non-kernel), but would want to check what other people did before.
