The printer was only an example. But a combined printer/scanner could render the idea better: when one wants to use the scanner, he connects his workstation to the printer, then goes there and places the original on the scanner plate, starts the scan, and returns to his workstation to disconnect and make the scanner available for other users in the office (windoze usually doesn't allow scanner sharing...).
