Depending on the controller, an overcurrent could do it. But your log doesn't show anything like that. Perhaps other electrical errors, like a bad impedance, could have some effect. > Now to my problem: > > One particular machine is known to lose USB peripherals from time to time. > (from none per day up to several times per day, it does not matter if the > machine is > idle or not - USB wise) > > Under WinXP (the normal operating environment, I am not responsible for > using this OS :-) some USB peripherals simply disappear and occasionally > re-appear if one is lucky enough. So nothing worked the first time you plugged it in. But when you plugged the devices in a second time then they worked? It certainly sounds like an electrical problem. > Machine is currently running and I am waiting for the next incident..... > > Question to the gurus: (Alan Stern included - it seems you missed my e-mail) > > given the above log fragments (more available on request), what hardware > component might be responsible for this mess? I don't know. You could try removing the hubs and printer, one at a time, to see if the remaining ones work okay. The one thing these errors all have in common is the EHCI controller, but you say you changed the motherboard. You could be suffering from cabling problems, bad terminations, or things like that. Did you examine the cables inside the computer case (connecting the motherboard to the case's USB ports)? > grep output for hub messages looks like this: > Jul 3 00:09:57 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:15 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:17 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:27 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:46 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:46 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:50 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:53 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:58 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: state 7 ports 7 chg 0000 evt 0000 > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: resetting for error -71 > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: enabling power on all ports > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: port 4, status 0101, change > 0001, 12 Mb/s > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: debounce: port 4: total 100ms > stable 100ms status 0x101 > Jul 3 00:10:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: state 7 ports 7 chg 0000 evt 0010 > Jul 3 00:11:00 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:04 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:05 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:06 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:08 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:10 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:14 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:15 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:16 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: state 7 ports 7 chg 0000 evt 0000 > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: resetting for error -71 > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: enabling power on all ports > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: port 4, status 0101, change > 0001, 12 Mb/s > Jul 3 00:11:19 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: debounce: port 4: total 100ms > stable 100ms status 0x101 > Jul 3 00:11:20 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: state 7 ports 7 chg 0000 evt 0010 > Jul 3 00:11:22 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:25 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:26 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:28 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:32 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:49 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:54 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:54 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:55 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:55 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:58 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:58 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:58 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: state 7 ports 7 chg 0000 evt 0000 > Jul 3 00:11:58 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: resetting for error -71 > Jul 3 00:11:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: hub_port_status failed (err = > -71) > Jul 3 00:11:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: port 4, status 0101, change > 0001, 12 Mb/s > Jul 3 00:11:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:11:59 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:00 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:00 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:02 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:02 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:08 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:10 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:10 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-5:1.0: transfer --> -71 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: state 7 ports 4 chg 0000 evt 0000 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: resetting for error -71 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: logical disconnect on port 6 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: error resetting hub: -19 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: state 7 ports 8 chg 0040 evt 0000 > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: port 6, status 0501, change > 0000, 480 Mb/s > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: usb_probe_interface > Jul 3 00:12:13 Voluson kernel: hub 1-6:1.0: usb_probe_interface - Each -71 error indicates a low-level communications failure. But exactly what is impossible to say. You'd have to use an oscilloscope or logic analyzer to really see what's going on.
