No data should get more than about 30 seconds behind by default. With the
-o sync option on ext2fs mounts it should be virtually instantaneous.

We have it I think. That you saw a case it didnt work might indicate bugs
elsewhere.

popup. How does that work on a machine with no console ?

That means if you reconnect having changed it elsewhere you crap bad
data onto the disk. At the very least you would need to read the magic numbers
of the _media_ to be sure its not same drive, different disk
