Yes. sd_mod is the module for SCSI disk or non ide zip drive 
support.

It looks as if you've built the SCSI support you need as modules, and
the modules aren't loaded.  Try:

modprobe sd_mod

and try usb again.  If it works, putting:

alias char-major-8 sd_mod

in /etc/modules.conf (it may be conf.modules, depending on your distribution)
to load this module automatically on an as-needed basis.

If you don't understand what this means, I would also suggest to read
kerneld.txt and kmod.txt in the Documentation/ directory of the Linux
source to learn about it.  It's too useful a tool to pass up.

Anyone know offhand which version of modutils began supporting the usb/
directory?
