With some help in the form of some food for thought by David
Brownell, I have gotten USB working on my recalcitrant box. I have a
question, though, that I cannot let alone.

I got things working by swapping the mobo out for another,
identical one. (I have three of this model.) The only difference was
that the board I swapped in had an older BIOS version (I had not flashed
it). The problem is that the new bios version does not assign the USB
host controller an IRQ (it displays 'N/A' at bootup). Windows does not
seem to need this; Linux, however, "could not determine an IRQ for
device."

Before I swapped hardware, I wrote Iwill tech support, asking how I
could make the BIOS assign an IRQ In lieu of that, I asked if I could
have a copy of the older BIOS version, which is not available on their
site.

In response, I was told to use the latest version, which would
*not* assign an IRQ, but would enable the USB controller. This is when
I swapped my boards.

Should Linux be able to assign an IRQ to the controller even though
the BIOS does not? If it can't, then as far as I can see, Iwill
Xa100plus's with later BIOS versions will never work.

If I understand things correctly, usb-ohci asks the kernel PCI code
for the IRQ, or some such. Is there someone who should know about
this? I'm tempted to post this to the LKML, but you will forgive me if
I'm a little hesitant about posting.

     Any thoughts?
