One other thought: Users are pretty good about opting out
of developer-targeted lists. Most peoples eyes glaze over
when the geek-speak gets over their heads. Therefore, if the
linux-usb list were renamed "linux-usb-users", I think folks
who are less technically fluent and experienced would choose
to ask their questions there.
I think the criteria for the success of the subject differentiation
would be that when users ask questions on the linux-usb-user list,
that their questions get effectively answered. If users are asking
questions and their questions go unanswered, eventually they'll
move over to the developers' list in an effort to gets help.
Therefore, there is no need to restrict who can post to the
developers' list as long as someone is keeping users happy on
the other list.
The benefit of this is that we retain an open system that
allows users to "graduate" to participating in the developers'
list easily when they are ready. Obviously, the folks on the
developers' list can send feedback to users who are obviously
using the wrong list.
