I'm aware of this situation. Whether it's a problem
that we can fix in the current printing subsystem
is unclear to me.
I spent some time yesterday trying to cause printer
errors (out of paper or offline). I probably
wasn't printing files that are large enough,
because every time that I printed (e.g., printer.c),
lpr (& lpd) finished and the USB printer driver
finished before the printer (Epson 740) had printed
just 2-3 lines. I added some dbg() lines to
printer.c in open(), write(), and close(), and
the driver was well out of the picture in my
small test (but not in yours), so I'll use a bigger
test next time.
In any case, printers have some local buffering (size
varies from one printer to the next), so even with
large files, if the printer runs out of paper on the
last few pages, the printer driver will have finished,
the HCD will have transferred all of the data to the
printer, and the error will be local to the printer,
its LEDs etc., and the user (if one is around).
I'd like to see a solution to this problem and I'll
keep looking into it. I'd also be happy for someone
to fix it before I do. 8;)

sending. Is this a known limitation of printer.c? Is this printer
out-of-spec somehow?
