I have the 4-port version and it works nicely under Linux. I have tried
it with 2.4.x and 2.2.16 boxes and it always switches fine. However, one
Win98 box only detects mouse/keyboard 5 mins or so after switching to
it, and the other Win98 box behaves as you describe. The OS/2 box and
the switch (!) hang immediately when I connect them, so it is possible
that the switch is doing something that does not comply with the USB
specs. It may be that your Mac is not totally compatible with it and is
causing it to stop working with linux as well.
Also, you do realize that there is a 3 second delay whenever you switch,
right? You also have to take into account the amount of time it takes
for the OS to redetect the devices (1 second for Linux, 5-20 seconds for
Windows). You might also want to look at the kernel log on the Linux box
(/var/log/messages) for any failure messages.
