About your Epson printer problem: (some) Epson printers
require that a special string be sent to them before they
actually operate (or cooperate). See
http://www1.webnik.ne.jp/~beat-a/LinuxEpson.html
If that's not enough info for you, visit the linux-usb
email archives at http://electricrain.com/lists/archive/linux-usb/
and search for "epson stylus". That should give you some
more background info on it.
