I've just spent most of today (I mean yesterday ;-) trying to get my Epson
Perfection 1200U working with linux kernel 2.2.17 backpatched to 
2.4.0-test2-pre2 and I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms you
reported. Did you ever sort out the cause of the problem? If so I would
appreciate an email with details of the fix.
