Hi there:

I am seeking assistance with a USB Wimax modem for Sprint/Virgin Mobile
to be used on a laptop with Kubuntu 12.04 and/or 12.10. The modem is a
3G/4G modem, Franklin Wireless U600 and Beceem ??? for the 4G part. It
is activated via Windows and has an active Virgin Mobile account.

At this time the modem is listed by lsusb:

" lsusb
. . .
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. 4-Port HUB
. . .
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1fac:0150 "

It is my understanding that th above vendor/product ID is for the 3G modem.
4G should be 198f:0220 (but never shows up).

The modem does not get switched despite a modified modeswitch.conf file
with much information on the modem gleaned from a lsusb -v command and
other sources. I have the serial number for the 3G modem part and other
technical data.

Yet, the common command  modprobe and others do not connect the modem to a USB
serial port.

Following instructions from multiple Internet sources I got as far as having it
register at ttyUSB0 - and connect and disconnect multiple times.

I have followed the Sprint instructions for the installation of the 3G part.
No luck since modprobe does not result in anything.
I also attempted to follow Sprint instructions to recompile the kernel to the
3G driver (drvix134.ko) but ran only into a plethora of error
messages - including complaints about the syntax (from Sprint, I guess).

I am on purpose not attaching more detailed information on my modem
because I do not know what you would need to see. It is better to ask
specific questions for precise answers.

Thank you for your time and effort. you will help many other people who are
also stuck setting up the
 modem.

Peter

PS:
I
have stopped attempts to compile the driver for the 4G part into the
kernel. I have a version of the driver from a .deb installation that did
not succeed. Mainly because my curretn version of Kubuntu is different.
