It all depends on what you want. I use a full distro for my firewall because
it is used for more than just a firewall and I like to play. For a friend
(who has no interest in Linux or all things geekish) I set up SmoothWall
which I think is excellent. You do not need any knowledge of Linux to
install or use it. The web interface is very good and it also has pretty
graphs and logs. The down side is that it is restricting because all you can
ever use it for is a firewall. It does have features like proxy, dhcp, VPN
etc....
