There are many solutions with Linux, I find tar to be best because you can
mix it with nfs, samba, ssh, gzip or whatever for the functionality you
need.
For linux boxen on a trusted network I use nfs with tar. Windoze boxen on a
trusted network (wouldn't put them on any other) samba and tar. And for my
linux servers on an untrusted network I use ssh and tar. This is using tape
drives but if you are backing up to hard disk or CD then add gzip for
compression.
