Hi Trev,
the window manager settings for "Keyboard Shortcuts" can render a
key inoperative if a shortcut action is "m" only.
Staroffice also has it's own shortcuts in the "Tools-Configure".
A XFree86 event testing utility called "xev" can output the "m"
characters keypress and keyrelease events.
Start's from the xterm window:
#xev
Other than that it might work to check the meta, mode settings in the
/etc/X11/XF86Config "keyboard section" or uninstall StarOffice/CoffeeCup
and imwheel to see if those applications caused the fault.
