Hmm, I've just had a wee think about this ... IIRC the original poster had a server and a workstation. The server mounts a filesystem on the workstation.
Therefore, if wrkstn shuts down, then the I 'spose the server has to umount the fs on wrkstn. So part of the shutdown procedure on the wrkstn needs to be to tell the server to execute fuser -km /mnt/workstation-fs followed by umount /mnt/workstation-fs I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to add the appropiate steps to the shutdown process. Hint: you'll need some automated mechanism for the workstation to tell the server what commands to execute. I hope this spells it out clearly and logically ... First person to post the right scripts and/or changes to existing shutdown scripts etc will receive from me a chocolate fish at the next canlug meeting.
