I am very new to Linux. I am a very competent Windows user, able to build
PC's and load Win9x, WinNT and Win2k and connect to networks etc.
I recently purchased a Red Hat set and a new hard drive with the intention
of learning Linux "by doing." (just as I did with Windows albeit over a few
years)
I have got to a point where I am a little frustrated and wondered if there
are people in Christchurch who offer their services/knowledge to people like
me (I am prepared to pay) to get past the initial hurdles to be able to use
Linux to become more confident with it.
I have installed a complete custom installation on a separate hard drive and
dual boot.
I really would like to be able to run Linux all of the time on my PC (with
Internet Connection Sharing or its equivalent and file and printer sharing
to the other Windows PC's and Hard drives - so the rest of the family can
carry on with their PC's).
One problem is connecting to the Internet. Firstly, wether I install
"Workstation" or "Custom -Complete" my D-Link PCI modem (CXT1035) is not
seen. I have tried connecting an external US Robotics Courier V.Everything
Modem which can be seen and installed and I have successfully connected to
ClearNET but then had difficulty browsing - how do I set the browser to use
the connection?
I think I can successfully set it up to connect my Linux PC to my Windows
2000 workgroup (I can ping both ways) but I need help setting up the sharing
and viewing between Windows 2000 and Linux and the Windows Fat32 drive on my
Linux PC.
Any ideas, or should I just keep floundering along and risk being turned off
Linux?
(Please consider, if you reply, that I am very new and Linux does seem
completely different to Windows.)
