Bah... my workstation's hard drive just bit the dust. It made the requisite funny noises, then took Windows and all my data down in a big flaming heap. Luckily I have my critical data backed up. Hopefully I have _all_ of my critical data backed up!
At least it failed within the warranty period... but that doesn't guarantee a successful replacement claim! For those who are interested in keeping track of brand/model-related failures, the drive in question is a Quantum Fireball Plus AS, 40Gb 7200rpm. This is the third time I've had a drive die without provocation* but the first one was stuffed when I got it, and the second one was a few years old. (*) I killed a drive once by accidentally shorting the power supply trying to install a fan with the machine running. But that was entirely my own stupid fault :) Right now I'm thankful to have more than one PC, a shared internet gateway and a shell account on my ISP :) Cheers, - DM
