Does anyone out there have a functioning network using a 2.4.9 i596 SMP kernel on SMP hardware?

My home linux server box is a dual P133 server with a Soyo 82430HX chipset M/B. This has successfully run various stable i586
SMP kernels from 2.2 up to and including 2.4.3 . The last SMP kernel I had that allowed network interfaces to function was a 2.4.3 kernel from an SGI XFS enhanced RH 7.1 distro (kernel rebuilt with Freeswan IPSEC patches).

Since then I have upgraded to the SGI RH7.2 distro and 2.4.9 kernel.

If I boot a 2.4.9 SMP kernel (and I've tried several different builds), it comes up, all services start up without error but both network interfaces are inoperable. An ifconfig shows that the interfaces are up (apparently), but they don't receive packets. An arp shows that MAC addresses are unresolved. I tried tcpdump on one interface and it showed arp broadcast being sent out but no response. On the other hand if I boot up a 2.4.9 UP kernel, the network functions as expected. I have tried upgrading NIC device drivers and 3 different types of NIC with no joy, so on the surface the problem appears to be kernel related.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be, how to diagnose it or where to look for answers?

Any help would be most appreciated.
cheers
Hugh Mc
