I calculated the actual bitrate as 4.16Mbit/s which sounds reasonable. I don't think it's realistically possible to saturate ethernet because when the traffic goes up the collisions increase. This would depend on the activity on the rest of the network but even acknowledgement packets from the receiving end will cause collisions if the sending end tries to transmit another packet at the same time. You will also be limited by the speed of the machines at both ends. A 486 with an ISA network card and hard drive controller will have serious trouble trying to max out the ethernet :) Feel free to correct me; I'm not a networking geek...
