Couldn't agree more. ACL's are a very good idea which is very poorly
implemented:
- they are not standard across various Unixes (AFAIK)
- even for Linux only: the most widely used distros do not have it
  by default, you have to go the extra mile (which potentially may complicate
  the problem, see below)

There is another one at http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/virtualfs/
which have some very nice features like transparent removable media access
for Xterms.

However with virtualfs here one drawback: it requires a patch for the C lib.
By itself this is no problem and those are provided.

However if a security patch is required in a hurry then you are left in the
cold.
