Why don't you just use the printer configuration tools offered by your
favourite distro? Surely that can set up something as trivial as a printer
on your parallel port. It will also deal with all the file format conversion
stuff and makes it irrelevant what kind of langauge your printer talks, as
long as ghostscript can generate it (package printfilter).
