I've been a GNOME user from about '99 (twm and CDE before that). The
main reason is that GNOME shipped with Debian, while KDE didn't because
of the QT problems.

I have looked at KDE from time to time, even running it for a while, but
I always found it a bit too "Windows" for my liking. (Or as a friend of
mine put it, GNOME must be infused with Crack Cocaine; KDE is shinier,
faster, and more stable --- but I keep going back to GNOME.)

The COSC department here at Liver University uses GNOME as the standard
desktop for three reasons.
  1. It is the standard desktop for RedHat (the most common
     Linux distribution).
  2. It will be the standard desktop for Solaris (the most
     common Unix variant).
  3. I was given the job of setting the desktop up a couple of
     years ago :) .

Over time I find myself using more and more of the GUI apps, even
(*gasp*) to manage files. As the apps become more than front-ends for
command-line tools I find I can be productive using the GUI tools, for
certain operations :) .
