> I would love to be more involved in the OSS movement in this country As would I, which it why I prompted this discussion with my previous email. Unfortunately I cannot add much at this stage from programming, and going overseas soon I won't be able to help much over the coming months. But I would like to be involved in the evanglising of solutions.
> You have to be aware of the economics of it. I fully realise there is much more at stake financially than just the ticket price of windows vs linux. Software and hardware is part a small part of the cost in an information system. It has also served to highlight that other people realise this as well. But, to the end user, a saving of a couple of hundred bucks on the purchase price of a computer is significant. This then means that perhaps we need different documents, OSS in IT for organisations, and OSS for individuals. How then, do we come up with a comprehensive arguement supporting the use of OSS, primarily in government (by the people, for the people, ra ra ra) and for businesses that are interested to find out more. What sort of documents do we need to develop? Who do we need to approach? Ahem! Back a step... 1. What should we try and achieve? What is our goal? This will direct us in everything else. I think this should contain something like "the promotion and support of open source software in New Zealand as a viable sustainable information system" Other words, security, reliable ;) Yeah I know not great, but it took a minute and its a start. Let's here some other suggestions, and we can slowly move on and come up with something more decent. Cheers Gav
