LTSP itself across slow links is not good, due to having toload the kernel and Xfree over the link.
But a thin client with just Linux/Xfree and a lightweight (twm/blackice etc) window manager can work OK. Things get a bit better if you tunnel through ssh to get a bit of compression, but it's not really realistic over 56k dialup, but ADSL should be fine for general usage. I've tried X over our WAN here, on 512k and 128k links and it works fine on the 512k as long as I stay away from animated stuff, and the 128k was bearable, but not practical for a full time user.
