Hi Michael & Nick, Thanks for your replies. I used Harddrake to disable various devices including the scanner - no joy. I then removed the scanner connection and plugged the printer directly into the printer port - still no joy.
An urgent job on windows then meant shutting down linux. When I restarted linux the queued print job started up no problems, then I put a 2nd job through ok. My scanner plugs into the printer parellel port, and the printer cable plugs into the scanner. This works fine in win95 and win31. I don't often use the printer but now think I had the same or a similar problem once before. (stop for tests) I plugged the scanner back in and the printer into the scanner, ran a test print ok, then scanned a photo using xsane as root, the scanner is still disabled according to harddrake. Quit xsane and then printed another test. All seems to work ok now but I would like to know how to find out what is tying up lp0 if it happens again. Thanks again for the advice Barry
