Read the Network Administrators Guide by Olaf Kirch. It's available either as a printed book from O'Reilly or off the www. Also by far the best Linux text is the RUTE http://rute.sf.net/ If your question is not answered in there then forget the question, you don't need to know the answer. For networking you need chapters 25 through to 29.
