It is also to encourage you to try Linux and use it in your everyday life. Linux and its History Linux is an Operating System (OS). An OS is a piece of software by itself which allows programs and users to interact with their computer hardware in a transparent way. This means that users and programs do not have to worry about dealing with the computer hardware directly. Windows and Unix are OSes (albeit very different), but Microsoft Word is not. An OS consist of a core component, called the kernel, and other components which provide additional features (e.g. filesystem) which may be included in the kernel.
