OK...

Replying to myself again.

The links in /etc/alternatives were pointing at LPring instead of cups, and
the other apps I print from use lpr.cups directly.

Mystery solved, I can now draw the cable maps.  Oh damn, maybe I should have
left it broke...

The jobs don't even arrive in cups, but if I print to file then pipe the
file through lpr.cups it works fine to any printer, so I suspect it dosn't
like something on my setup..  Will play more later on.

make sure the page sizes are OK.  If that doesn't work attach an "strace
-f -p PID" to the running program, and look for popen, open, fork or
exec in the output.
